My Dad's Derrick

I was in Manti, Utah, today, visiting with a friend who lives in Hinckley, Utah.  He was telling me about the derrick that his dad had.  The derrick is gone now, but he had a picture of it that he would send to me.  I got thinking about my dad and his derrick.  It was heavy and had mast or post that was standing vertical in the center.  The cross piece rested on a large metal swivel of some type.  The braces were heavy metal pipes that came up from each corner which braced the center post.  When one hay stack was completed, it was pulled with a team of horses for a short distance to build a new stack.  I do not have any pictures of it.  When I was still living at home, 1957, there was an aerial photographer that took pictures of farmsteads in the area.  He took a picture of my dad's homestead.  There was the house, out buildings and corals.  The top picture is the farmstead.  The farmstead is about 1 1/2 miles west of the the Sutherland church.  The derrick is located at the top edge of the picture.  The second picture is and enlargement of the derrick. My friend also mentioned that his dad sold my dad a work horse.  My dad paid him $40 for it.

Centerfield, Utah

We took the short cut to the temple in Manti yesterday. We had seen this derrick a couple of weeks earlier, but I did not have a camera. I had it yesterday and got the picture.

Utah County Derrick

This derrick is located on the east side of I-15 between Provo and Payson, Utah. I had to stop on the shoulder of the freeway to get this picture. It has probably been there for over 100 years.

About a mile north of Hinckley, Utah you will find this derrick. Of course it is not in use anymore. It looks like the boom has rolled 180 degrees. There are some posts hanging from the boom with a cable that would help hold the boom straight under a load.

Sutherland derrick

I could not get close to this derrick without walking through someone's yard. I will go back sometime and get permission. It is about a half mile south of the Sutherland Church.

There are no homes or farms at this derricks location. The native brush has grown back in. It appears at one time there was some farming going on nearby. The boom hangs from the apex of the derrick.

This derrick is located at Joseph, Utah. It was to far from the road to get a good picture with my camera.
