Centerfield, Utah

We took the short cut to the temple in Manti yesterday. We had seen this derrick a couple of weeks earlier, but I did not have a camera. I had it yesterday and got the picture.

Utah County Derrick

This derrick is located on the east side of I-15 between Provo and Payson, Utah. I had to stop on the shoulder of the freeway to get this picture. It has probably been there for over 100 years.

About a mile north of Hinckley, Utah you will find this derrick. Of course it is not in use anymore. It looks like the boom has rolled 180 degrees. There are some posts hanging from the boom with a cable that would help hold the boom straight under a load.

Sutherland derrick

I could not get close to this derrick without walking through someone's yard. I will go back sometime and get permission. It is about a half mile south of the Sutherland Church.

There are no homes or farms at this derricks location. The native brush has grown back in. It appears at one time there was some farming going on nearby. The boom hangs from the apex of the derrick.

This derrick is located at Joseph, Utah. It was to far from the road to get a good picture with my camera.

HAY DERRICK

This is another derrick style. It is attached to one runner like a runner for a sled. It is held upright by four guy wires. The cross member can be rotated 180 degrees to the left or right. When the hay stack is completed, the derrick is pulled to a different location to build another stack. The guy wires need to be held while it is being move so it will not fall down. This derrick is located in Scipio, Utah

My wife and I were going for a little drive one winter afternoon. We drove through the town of Meadow, Utah, and saw this derrick. We were not looking for derricks, but I have my camera with me most of the time for pictures. There are two other derricks relatively near our home that we will visit soon. The boom is missing here. I am not aware of any derricks that are still in use.

This derrick is on its way down. It is located south Farrin, Utah.

Three derricks in the Gunnison area follow this same pattern.

This derrick has the boom and two bracing poles that forms a two small triangle or one larger triangle. Many derricks have not been used for years and they have begun to deteriorate.

The derrick is located in Gunnison, Utah. The center post which holds the boom can turn 360 degrees.

Derrick Three

This is the third derrick style. It can be viewed from the highway between Roosevelt and Helper, Utah. The four corner poles come together at the top to give it pyramid shape with a boom that hangs by a chain from the apex of the pyramid. This one is in pretty good shape. I was just a boy when I helped my dad haul the hay. There would be two or three wagons pulled by a team of horses. Two men would be out in the field loading the wagons. Dad would be on the hay stack building the stack. My uncle Bert would be on the wagon with the Jackson fork. Another person would lead or ride the derrick horse hooked to the cable which would raise or lower the Jackson fork. At lunch time Mother would feed the haying crew. The horse would also be feed and given a chance to rest. Dad had to milk and feed the cows in the morning before the haying started, and do it again in the evening after the haying was finished. Farmers would work help each other to get they hay up.

Derrick by Paragonah

Many of the derricks look as this one does. The cable has broken and the longer, heavier end of the boom is on the ground. I have not seen one that is in use. There are several reproductions of hay derricks on the Roper Farms in Fillmore, Utah.
